The Carriers

Just wanted to remind everyone that I am still putting out pages of The Carriers at http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Carriers/index.php
its been slow going but the story continues. Hopefully I can kick back and start doing some more art and 3d work soon. I'm still working on the new schedule and fitting art into every day.

studying

the last few weeks in between doing pages for The Carriers, I have been working on refining my colors and brush use. The one thing I've learned from the second issue of The Carriers is that my current way of working is too proceedural. I follow the same process every time. This is great for consistency but it tends to slow me down and keep me from experimenting. In the third issue I hope to start to morph my style toward an even more painterly approach. I have been heavily inspired by the work of Jamie Jones, John Singer-Sargent, and Whit Brachna. I want to move toward more controlled palettes and dry media brush work. I still want to retain some of my linework within this new approach but I will no longer be using a 50% grey to block in shadows. I will be trying to use straight color to describe light and shadow.
This is my attempt to connect my digital work with my traditional sensibilities. Hopefully I can continue to grow as a painter over the next few months and make The Carriers even better!

Traume Von Magpie Art

Are you folks reading this?
Traume Von Magpie By Douglas Frey has been one of the most consistently entertaining comics coming out right now. This is a web comic that is better than most print comics. It is psychedelic at times, incredibly introspective at other times. The art is the star of the show here. It has a very early animation (Popeye; Felix the Cat) style mixed in with some Tony Millionaire influences. The inking is fantastic by the way! Frey uses all sorts of inking styles throughout the pages but the ones that stand out are the pages inked with a brush.

I could gush on and on about this comic. Check it out at-

Here is a piece I made for Mr. Frey featuring his Magpie Man (with steps)-

paintover

I was thinking about the tv show gargoyles when I made this... one of my favorite shows when i was a kid. very episodic in its storytelling. a lot of cartoons at the time didn't have an ongoing story that grew as it went along. I liked gargoyles for many of the same reasons I like Battlestar Gallactica. of course I'm older now and my taste has changed quite a bit but I have always been a fan of people creating their own mythologies. that is what im trying to do with the comic.

the carriers btw, was a featured comic on Drunk Duck this week! so yay!

art rage...is kid's play.

I don't know what compelled me to get into art rage again. maybe its the influence David Hong's work has had on me. Either way, my appreciation of the program has not really faded. It is true that I cannot really accomplish the same polished look I may get in Painter or PS, but that doesn't discredit the software. The incredibly stripped down interface is easy enough for a child. The look and feel of the paint is really believable and that means a lot to digital artists who got their start in oil painting. Long story short... I may be playing in this sandbox again.

The Carriers.... by- Kevin D. Bandt

This is a first look at the new comic. It is called The Carriers. It is a fantasy story set in a punk future in the Middle East... Oh and some buildings can fly.... oh yes they can!
The plan is to get the website up and going and have the story continously published there. I have all sorts of story to tell so I really look forward to getting more work out for you to see.

quick character. maybe an hours work.

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Just wanted to give another glimpse at the comic. I learn so much every time I set out to do a panel. I've been pretty lucky to be able to get as much of the comic done as I have. Hopefully I can continue at this pace and me done by the end of the month.

Then the fun stuff starts! When you can actually read the story.
